The short answer

Singapore is hot and humid all year, and rain falls in every month: the Meteorological Service Singapore records an average of 171 rain days a year. Two monsoon seasons shape the calendar, the Northeast Monsoon from December to early March and the Southwest Monsoon from June to September. The heavier rain falls from November to January.

  • Temperatures: nights usually 23 to 25 degrees, afternoons 31 to 33; May is the warmest month and December and January the coolest.
  • Humidity: a mean around 82 per cent all year, above 90 per cent in the mornings before sunrise.
  • Rain: an average of 171 rain days a year, in every month; heaviest from November to January, driest in February.
  • Northeast Monsoon: December to early March, wet in its first half and relatively dry from late January.
  • Southwest Monsoon: June to September, with squalls before dawn and midday and short afternoon showers; the inter-monsoon months bring afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

What it means on the ground

  • The wet phase

The Northeast Monsoon opens with monsoon surges: widespread, continuous rain, at times with strong winds, usually from December to early January.

  • February, the driest month

In the monsoon's dry phase the rain-belt sits further south, and February is the driest month of the year, though not a promise of clear days.

  • Plan around the rain

Rain falls most often in the afternoons, so mornings are the easier window outdoors; the when-to-visit guide weighs the seasons against each other.
